The LPN forum is announcing the "Call for Officers" for the new LPN Forum in Pennsylvania. The Forum is looking for volunteers willing to run for four (4) officer positions within the Forum. The kickoff for the LPN Forum will be held at the Annual Summit at DeSales University, Center Valley on Friday, October 29, 2010. The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) has issued a call for poster abstracts for the 2010 Annual Summit to be held October 29, 2010, at DeSales University, Center Valley, PA. Interested poster participants are encouraged to submit an abstract following the prescribed guidelines. No more than two posters may be submitted by the same individual. Pertussis on the Rise: Take Action Pennsylvania
Pertussis (whooping cough) is on the rise in Pennsylvania. To address this issue, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Pennsylvania Immunization Coalition are holding a pertussis webinar on September 9th that is designed to alert health care professionals and other immunization partners to the increase in pertussis cases and how we can all take action to help prevent further spread of the disease. Article on Children and Disasters: Hurricane Katrina The American Nurses Association (ANA) Dept. of Nursing Practice and Policy provides the following information: ANA serves on the Associate Board for the journal Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness (DMPHP). The article below was reported on in 8/24/10 USA Today. "The September Special issue of DMPHP is devoted to the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and today (8/24/10) the Journal published online “Children as Bellwethers of Recovery: Dysfunctional Systems and the Effects of Parents, Households, and Neighborhoods on Serious Emotional Disturbance in Children After Hurricane Katrina” by David M. Abramson, PhD, MPH; Yoon Soo Park, MS; Tasha Stehling-Ariza, MPH; Irwin Redlener, MD. The findings demonstrated that children exposed to Hurricane Katrina were nearly 5 times as likely as a pre-Katrina cohort to exhibit serious emotional disturbances. Their research concluded that disasters affect children in different and important ways which can negatively affect a child’s physical, mental, and social development." Read more.

We have approximately 3 weeks remaining to receive abstracts for the Best Practices Conference. Several weeks ago we sent you the documents that are used to submit an abstract. We are again sending them attached to this email. We ask that you share the document with your members/colleagues/healthcare community and encourage them to submit a best practice for consideration. We have also engaged our keynote speaker for the event. His name is Dr. David Nash who is internationally known for his work in health policy (see attachment). The Best Practices Committee is asking you to consider being a sponsor of the keynote speaker for the conference. Donations of $1000 and upward will assure you of getting exposure in the marketing materials for the event, recognition the day of the event and a private meeting the day of the event with the keynote speaker.
